Crafting A Centerpiece One Pumpkin At A Time
November 18, 2009
10 Months to Go.
Yesterday I went pumpkin shopping. I have this centerpiece idea for them. As mentioned before, our theme is ‘Harvest’ and I plan on using and abusing it right down to the flower girl (or should I say ‘Leaf girl’ – I’ll come back to this later). So back to the centerpiece idea- a pumpkin as a vase for the flowers with Me and my Husband-In-Training’s (HIT) name carved on one side, and the wedding date on the other. Then we will illuminate the inside of the pumpkin (shining through the carvings) with electric tea light candles. Luv it. Luv it. I’m way excited I got this idea relatively early because right around this time – post halloween- I can get some craft pumpkins in my favorite part of the store, CLEARANCE. And that I did. A few days back i had bought a sample craft pumpkin to show to my HIT. By grace, one of his co workers (who’s also a pastor) is a pumpkin carver. So after receiving the green light that the pumpkin was carve worthy, I revisited the other man in my life – Michael’s – to snag up as many pumpkins as I could. When I bought the first one, I got it for $5.09 – down from $16.99 (as if, who would pay $17 for that?) . Yesterday, I got 15 of them for $3.39/ea.!!
The only downside is that they only had white pumpkins left. No biggie – just another reason to have a get-together – Pumpkin painting party! I need to get about 6 more – gonna go to another Michael’s…
So here’s…
Lesson #6 : If you have an engagement period lasting a year or more and you are going for a theme that fits a particular season, shop early. Buy your themed items at the end-of-season clearance the year prior. Big savings.
My only worry is that people may confuse the centerpiece choice with a halloween theme – a wannabe holiday that I couldn’t care less about. Let’s hope our guests won’t be so narrow-minded.
I had originally thought of having a cornucopia as a centerpiece, but not vertically dramatic enough.
Back to the ‘Leaf girl’ – we’re having the flower girl toss golden silk leaves instead. Yep, I’m milking this theme for all its worth!

luv the dress idea…may be tough to get in retail though. If anything, you can get a spectrum of blue fabric and a tailor/seamstress will have a good idea of how to put it together for you.
I’ll keep your centerpiece in my thoughts

I LOVE your centerpiece idea and u r hired to assist me in my creative endeavor of making an original centerpiece. My theme…the ocean I love the caribbean ocean where the water starts off turquoise and gets darker as it goes deeper so that’s what I want for my BM dresses but im clueless on centerpieces. My ideas arent dramatic enuff for me
